Mobile Learning: The Equalizer in Education

Mobile technology is impacting different sectors of society and will have a major role to play in the future of education. However, to realize the full potential of mobile learning, education must become learner-centered, with access to learning materials from any location and at anytime, while offering more effective and efficient ways to make education more affordable.

Benefits of Mobile Learning

Mobile technology, along with open education resources, provides an equal opportunity to all for access to learning materials. Technology can be used to reach adult students, the disadvantaged, and those with limited mobility. Also, individuals do not have to leave their communities or families to learn and employees can access learning materials in the workplace. In addition, it is an excellent opportunity to deliver learning materials to developing countries citizens, considering they are moving quickly towards the use of mobile technology rather than acquiring desktop computers and then moving to mobile technology.

Mobile technology can be used for both formal and informal learning. In formal learning, students can use their mobile devices to access course materials while they are on the move or anytime they want to learn. In informal learning settings, individuals are able to learn anywhere and at anytime. Having the content online and available immediately means students can learn wherever they are, despite the constraints of busy work schedules, commuting, etc., and therefore increasing their motivation and opportunity for learning.

Using mobile technology also allows learners to use the communication capability of the technology to network with people around the world so that they learn from each other and share information. Experts in the field will be able to use the technology to tutor, coach, and mentor their peers and students. Students in remote locations and the disadvantaged will feel connected and empowered to learn using the technology.

The Challenges of Mobile Learning

The biggest challenge for the use of mobile learning in education is the need to bring about a change in people’s attitude towards the use of mobile technology in education. To address this, policy makers and educators must be trained on how to effectively implement mobile technology in education. Also, it must be understood that with ongoing research in mobile learning and the development of user-friendly mobile technology, mobile learning will expand resulting in increased use.

Another challenge identified is that developing countries tend to copy the traditional education system from other countries. However, these systems were designed many years ago and do not provide the flexibility for mobile learning. Rather than building more classrooms for face-to-face learning, there is the need to deliver education on mobile technology so that learners can learn from anywhere and they can be tutored by experts and teachers in their local communities. It is important for countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to develop their own infrastructure and pedagogical model for mobile learning.

Also, the lack of urgency to start using mobile technology in education is inhibiting the effective delivery of education. Educational organizations’ strategic and education plans must include strategies for implementing mobile learning since in the very near future, mobile technology will replace desktop and laptop computers. Also individuals must keep up with changes in their fields and access relevant information to participate in on-going education.

Open Education Resources and Mobile Learning

Mobile technology coupled with open education resources is a very powerful combination to revolutionize education and to provide education to all. Education is more than providing access to content. Education should facilitate the formation of learning communities for learners to interact, share their experience and learn from each other.

The learning space is moving away from the classroom at a specific time to anyplace and anytime. Therefore education has to re-invent itself to address particular trends, such as learning becoming learner-centered, virtual and globalized, as well as the demands for a more flexible and inclusive system, and the demand to provide education for all. The availability of mobile technology globally, coupled with electronic learning materials and open educational resources, is making learning more accessible and affordable to anyone who wants to learn. Therefore leaders must make the shift to deliver education through current and emerging innovative technologies.

1. El avance de la tecnología de las comunicaciones es cada vez mayor, el desafío para quienes somos parte de la educación de nuestros países es aprender a convivir con ella, superar  nuestros temores y aprender a manejarla. Debemos actualizarnos y capacitarnos permanentemente, sobretodo porque nuestro compromiso con los niños y jóvenes esta en brindarles una educación de calidad que acorde al avance de los tiempos.
   
2. Generalmente, en nuestros países el rol del docente ha decaído, debido a los últimos resultados de la evaluación de los aprendizajes (PISA) que casi siempre están por debajo de lo aceptable. Todo esto deviene de una pobre capacitación que lo limita ante el avance de la tecnología. El Estado no toma en cuenta sus prioridades y no invierte en la educación, especialmente en la tecnología. Por último, los maestros piensan que deben enseñar así como les enseñaron a ellos, con la misma metodología y los mismos medios.
   
3. Creo que la educación debe ir siempre a la vanguardia del avance de la ciencia y la tecnología debe estar siempre abierto al diálogo entre la cultura y la tecnología. No podemos soslayarnos de su avance, tarde o temprano se tendrá que invertir en tecnología móvil para lograr mejores aprendizajes y que la educación esté al alcance de todos los ciudadanos del mundo.

Sandra desde Ensenada, Mexico dice:

1. En mi experiencia a nivel medio superior, el mayor reto es la capacitación de docentes en este ámbito y el redireccionamiento de técnicas de aprendizaje a distancia.
   
2. Los obstáculos son: el poco conocimiento respecto a la educación a distancia o móvil y la falta de capacitación del docente tanto en aspectos pedagógicos como en el uso de las TIC.
   
3. Definitivamente sí. Es una inversión que es proyectiva, a corto plazo y con miras de actualización acorde con la demanda.

Gustavo desde Alajuela, Costa Rica dice:

1. Un porcentaje importante del cuerpo docente no está familiarizado con el uso de dispositivos móviles para fines educativos. Muchos ni siquiera han tenido contacto con aprendizaje virtual de algún otro tipo. Urge desarrollar programas que acerquen al educador al potencial de aprendizaje que representan las nuevas tecnologías. No es suficiente proveer recursos materiales, es imperativo un cambio de paradigma en la mentalidad de los docentes. Y esto solo se consigue mediante esfuerzos sistemáticos y sostenidos en el tiempo.
   
2. Existe resistencia a cualquier cambio. Lo nuevo es visto con desconfianza. Además se percibe la tecnología como un lujo, no una necesidad. Se subestima el potencial de la tecnología, limitándola en muchos casos al área del entretenimiento.
   
3. Es una tendencia mundial ineludible, los modelos tradicionales de educación quedarán en el pasado tarde o temprano. Cualquier esfuerzo que promueva la incorporación del aprendizaje móvil representará un aporte para el desarrollo futuro de nuestros países.

Christine from Jamaica says:

1. The challenges faced derive from the resistance to change, not from mobile technology. The development of teacher competencies will begin when the Ministry of Education mandates all teachers to engage in continuous professional development to equip them with the necessary skills to employ mobile technology in teaching and learning. When students in Jamaica are introduced to technology of any kind they readily embrace it. It is usually the adults who are the obstacle in their learning. It can be noted that almost every child has a cell phone, so it will not be very difficult to get students to use it as a tool for education.
   
2. Cultural tradition does not have much to do with the promotion of massive mobile learning. It is affected more by teacher incompetence, fear and resistance.
   
3. Definitely. As a nation, if we invest more in teacher training, we will find that more students will achieve more from education. They do not have to be in a particular place to benefit from the learning. Also, it is always cheaper to purchase a cell phone than a laptop and time is almost conducive to study on the go with mobile technology.

1. Los retos son:

• Poder brindar educación de calidad para todos y todas;
• Poder utilizar el uso de las tecnologías móvil;
• Poder formar comunidades de aprendizajes con metodología participativas e innovadoras;
• Poder brindar la oportunidad a las personas jóvenes y adultos de las comunidades rurales que de alguna manera son excluidos de la educación formal.

Por otra parte considero que las ofertas formativas de los centros de educación formal y no formal en su mayoría deberían ser en línea.

2. El mayor obstáculo está en el o la docente, porque tiene que ver con la actitud.
   
3. Efectivamente. En la actualidad, la mayoría de las comunidades más remotas de Centroamérica y el Caribe tiene acceso a telefonía móvil. Por eso, se debe emprender programas o proyectos que ayuden a disminuir los obstáculos para que los y las docentes desarrollen las competencias necesarias para brindar una educación de calidad para todos y todas sin importar raza, religión, grupo étnicos, entre otros.

Oscar desde Medellín, Colombia dice:

1. Efectivamente pensar en la incorporación de las tecnologías móviles en todos los niveles educativos, demanda compromiso y disposición de los agentes del ámbito educativo. Un compromiso a la alfabetización permite evidenciar el potencial de los dispositivos móviles para “desterritorializar” los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje. También, la disposición a invertir sutura las brechas de acceso y conectividad inicialmente  requeridas para un aprendizaje apoyado en plataformas móviles.
   
2. Las posiciones catastrofistas, como las manifestadas sobre la relación TIC-Educación, ya es un común desafío, sobre todo en profesores de vieja, que datan de una resistencia a ultranza al uso de los TICs en educación.
   
3. Indudablemente, ya que las tendencias muestran que estás tecnologías vienen transformando la forma como interactúan los sujetos y en definitiva en como se relacionan con el conocimiento.

1. Mobile technology challenges educators to become more aware and involved with the possibilities and potentials of teaching and learning through technology. Mobile technology allows teachers to evolve in a changing technological world and to use the evolving technology to educate different students, on different learning curves, at their own pace and time. The challenges faced by teachers can easily be overcome if they utilize the evolving technology and do not resist the changing way of learning and teaching in today’s world.
   
2. Obstacles such as moving away from culture-specific and traditional learning may occur. This is to say that how different groups of people learn to do things, handed down by their elders, may be lost through the initiatives to promote massive mobile learning. What perhaps needs to be done is, when promoting mobile learning, make the curriculum or learning objectives more specific to address the needs of different cultures or infuse the different cultural languages into the mix.
   
3. I believe mobile education is the way forward in this technologically advanced world, where new technology is emerging every day. The benefits of mobile education are needed to meet the varied learning needs of different students in today’s fast-paced society. The benefit of meeting a wide array of people from varied places around the world, at a click of a mouse or a stroke of a key, is priceless. I think mobile education deserves the time, effort and investment needed to advance education in today’s world.

Dra. López desde Monterrey Nuevo León, México dice:

1. La aplicación efectiva de la tecnología móvil en la educación demanda programas de formación y desarrollo de competencias digitales en los docentes, quienes comúnmente son rebasados por sus alumnos.
   
2. Existe la concepción fuerte de rechazo hacia el uso de tecnología móvil en el proceso docente educativo, por considerar la existencia de "aprendizajes informales"
   
3. El potencial de la educación móvil depende de la aceptación y el cambio en el rol del docente. Los docentes son los diseñadores de estrategias virtuales y recursos educativos abiertos sin dar cabida a la discriminación entre el aprendizaje formal e informal, dado que la implementación del aprendizaje móvil desde un sistema escolarizado no permite disociar lo didáctico de lo a-didáctico.

Ramón desde San Juan, Puerto Rico, EE.UU dice:

1. El desafío mayor del aprendizaje móvil se encuentra en la motivación inicial y la responsabilidad del educando frente al reto. Sin embargo, entiendo que sería un logro si se trabajara la disciplina y la motivación de la educación a distancia en los educadores en primer lugar y luego en los educandos.
   
2. Los obstáculos que se enfrentan se acusan en que muy pocos estudiantes en América Latina tienen acceso a la tecnología móvil y conexión al Internet.
   
3. El futuro está centrado en tecnología móvil conectada al Internet como herramienta de aprendizaje, no hay dudas que el esfuerzo es compartido y la voluntad necesaria.

Universo de Acciones Verdes desde San Carlos, Venezuela dice:

1. Uno de los grandes desafíos es lograr que los docentes se motiven a manejar adecuadamente las herramientas tecnológicas para desarrollar sus actividades educativas de manera virtual. Otro gran desafío, al menos en Venezuela, es contar con el poder adquisitivo de la herramienta tecnológica sin ver afectado su presupuesto; de tal manera que se podrá integrarse con actitud positiva a este nuevo sistema. La situación se puede solventar, si el Ministerio de Educación, conjuntamente con los organismos competentes, se dedican a capacitar y dotar a los docentes para incorporarse efectivamente a la educación virtual en los diferentes niveles y modalidades.
   
2. El principal obstáculo sería la resistencia al cambio de los seres humanos en la edad adulta, ya que los niños y jóvenes se adaptan con mayor facilidad a los cambios de paradigmas. En el caso de Venezuela, otro obstáculo sería la falta de planificación y organización de las actividades desarrolladas por el Ministerio de Educación y la preparación de los facilitadores a cargo de la capacitación del personal docente.
   
3. La Educación Móvil posee un gran potencial para una educación liberadora y de calidad, que le permite a los estudiantes descubrir y desarrollar sus potencialidades y ser protagonistas de su formación integral, así que vale la pena invertir tiempo y dinero en este proyecto prometedor. Tomando en cuenta que, en algún momento, debe darse un contacto presencial para conservar los afectos y desarrollar las emociones humanas.
