“ARTMEDICINE” EDUCATION, NUTRITION, AND THE RIGHTS OF THE BRAIN*
Carlos H. Espinel, MD, is the director and founder of the Blood Pressure Center and Professor of Medicine and Scholar in Bioethics at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He is Fellow of the American College of Physicians and Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. Born in Pamplona, Colombia, he graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Caldas. Dr. Espinel specialized in Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Cardiology at Emory University, Medical College of Virginia, and Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Espinel divides his time in the care of patients, teaching, and research. He has published extensively, and has received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to science and to the humanities. He has contributed in several fields. Medical education. In addition to Georgetown, he has been Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and University of Tennessee. He created “ArtMedicine”, a medical education model that integrates science, the humanities and art into a field that teaches together science, creativity and compassion. ArtMedicine is taught at universities such as Georgetown and Johns Hopkins. Military medicine. Dr. Espinel served in the Colombian Army and graduated as an Officer, First-In-Class (Armory School) and in the U.S. Army as a Captain and Post Surgeon in the Korean Demilitarized Zone during the Viet Nam War. He was awarded the US Medal of Honor by the U.S. President. Tropical medicine. He cared for victims of an epidemic of Yellow Fever in the jungles of South America and his experience is the theme for the “World-Wide Campaign Against Infectious Diseases” begun in 1996. Hispanic and other minority health issues. He founded The Blood Pressure Center for the prevention and care of patients with hypertension and cardiovascular diseases in the multiracial and multi-cultural population of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. He has created educational health programs for Hispanics and other minorities, televised nationwide as a public service. Hypertension and risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. He invented: 1) The FENa Test, the most accurate test for the diagnosis of kidney failure; 2) Dietary basis for the treatment of kidney failure and hypertension; 3) Tests, including The Salt Step Test, and diets for sodium-sensitive hypertension patients. 4) He investigates nutritional and drug therapies for the treatment of cholesterol. Public health. His research is scientific basis for the US Food Labeling Law, transcendent in 20th century US Public Health. It stipulates that food labels must list the exact amount of sodium and other contents, thus effecting population nutrition and prevention of disease (U.S. Federal Register, January, 1993). “ArtMedicine”. His discoveries include: 1) Evidence of disease depictions in art, for example: a) Polio, recognized by medical science only in the 19th century, found in a 1428 fresco by Masaccio; b) Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, also only recognized in the 19th century, found in a 1608 work by Caravaggio; c) A Syndrome of Congenital Disease, unrecognized in Western medical literature, found in a scroll by the Ming Dynasty master, Chou Ch’en. 2) He is a world-renowned diagnostician. He has also diagnosed illnesses afflicting artists, including de Kooning, Rembrandt, and Michelangelo; 3) He formulated a theory in neuroscience for “How the brain sees”.
Dr. Espinel’s discoveries have generated public interest and been covered by press, television and Internet, world-wide. “ArtMedicine,” Dr. Espinel says, “is a new way of seeing art and medicine, seeks to humanize medicine.”
