SUMMARY

Creation of the “Guias Alimentarias” reflected Venezuela’s effort to put into operation the policies stemming from the University of the United Nations to update the standards regarding nutrition in Latin America. This article makes historical reference to the Venezuelan initiatives in this area from the end of the 19th century until the creation—by the State—of the National Institute of Nutrition (Instituto Nacional de Nutrición) in 1949. It also describes the consumption patterns of Venezuelans and their deficiency-related illnesses. Finally it explains the experiences of Fundaiuty and the Consultora Chaguaramo in introducing the “Guias Alimentarios” to teachers in nine states of the country within the framework of the reformed school (basic level).
