4. What is the Advanced Continuing Education (ACE) initiative?

The ACE Initiative seeks to improve educational opportunities throughout Latin America by working with educational institutions in a variety of ways. The efforts undertaken within the Initiative have been shaped by technological innovations and the development of virtual communication networks as a universal tool for education. Latin American universities face the obstacles of insufficient numbers of post-graduate professors, a poor retention rate, and diminishing educational resources, often worsened by constraints on government budgets, inefficient resource utilization, and inflexible curricula.

In order to address these and other problems, ISTEC has taken the positive view that the scarcity of resources is a catalyst for innovation in education. By encouraging resource sharing and technological transfers, the ACE Initiative aims to upgrade human resources through on-site training, distance learning, non-traditional exchange programs, and curriculum development. All these themes coincide with a growing interest from industry and governments, as reiterated at the Summit of the Americas in Santiago, Chile, by the OAS’ Inter-American Council for Integral Development, and by the Inter-American Development
