In this article, the author explains the situation of higher education in the region and identifies its problems and challenges. As a result of the new demands – demographic, socio-cultural, economical and labor markets—that stem from external factors and are brought about from the very process of knowledge, it is easy to conclude that higher education runs the serious risk of being exceeded by the profound and rapid transformation of the circumstances in which it should operate. The author questions if the higher education systems in the region are in a position to respond to such varied and complex challenges. In addition, he indicates that in this changing tide, institutions must participate and assume the responsibility for self-evaluation. Higher education should form a new ethos of quality to reform and maintain its reputation.
