SUMMARY

In this article, the author analyzes the reforms undertaken in the educational system of Belize from the period 1950-1994. Four educational sectors in Belize—pre-school, primary, secondary and tertiary—have been subjected to numerous policy changes during the period; initially with the hopes of making education more accessible to all Belizeans, and later to address issues of quality and relevance. By tracing the political history and the development of the educational system of Belize, and by examining current reform proposals and their subsequent implementation, the author analyzes the factors that have influenced the attempts at education reform and the government’s commitment to the same.
