The purpose of this article is to encourage analysis of and thoughts on infant development, its challenges, and accomplishments. The first section briefly evaluates the attention given to infants during initial and basic education in Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States. The second section presents some of the findings of research studies regarding the importance of investing in infant education, and the third section highlights family and community participation and its contributions to non-formal education as a Latin Amercian exampe of universal education. The article advocates the merit and virtue of this alternative to education, and presents the challenges that continue to exist as a product of the same. Finally, and within the context of global political support for the recognition of the importance of infant development, the fourth section ends by signalling the importance of convincing financial decision makers in the countries to invest in quality programs for infants.
