La Educación
Número: (123-125) I,III
Año: 1996

The author points out that the educational arena in Costa Rica has become an important center of ideological debate and political struggle. It is widely agreed that an undisputable link exists between politics and education in Costa Rica. While education once held a privileged position in Costa Rican society, dramatic decreases in the education budget, lack of political support, and economic limitations in the face of increased crime have led to a neglected education sector. Attempts to reorganize the national education system have been repeatedly frustrated during the last two decades. The author concludes by stating that through the use of education for social control and through the use of ideology for the exercise of political power, the consensual vocation that has characterized the Costa Rican regime ever since the late nineteenth century may be safeguarded.
