This article emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary study of literacy, beginning with the traditional concept that implies the transmittal of an instrumental technique carried out by institutions and other diverse modalities. To this end, the complexity of the analysis and classification of different writing methods created by man is examined. Reference is made to the need for mutual comprehension in all places and at all times, in the process of conquests and colonization, as well as in the classic antiquity. In terms of the present and predictable future, questions are posed regarding the problems of literacy and educational enrollment, and proposals are offered for necessary action.
