SUMMARY

This article provides a historical overview of educational development in the British Caribbean during the 19th century and its effect on the educational system currently in place. The author describes the origins of educational inequality in the region and relates the prolonged struggle of the British Caribbean territories to secure economic and curriculum reforms for both primary and secondary education. The article concludes by highlighting the achievements of the period and their influence on 20th century Caribbean society.
