SUMMARY

In this essay, it is contended that in order for the Guatemalan society to be able to promote socioeconomic development in the context of an authentic democratic and equalitarian model, the cultural diversity of the population must be an indispensable factor in the planning of educational policies for the new century. To illustrate this idea, the author presents a generic analysis of educational indicators in Guatemala and of the most eminent challenges that the nation confronts in this field. The author concludes by presenting some elements to be considered in the establishment of the educational policies of a multicultural society.
