Originally planned as a comprehensive guide to sampling for statisticians working in the health professions, and published under the title of Sampling for Health Professionals, this book could be an excellent reference for practicing statisticians and students in different fields of interest. It could be recommended as a textbook for introductory or intermediate level courses on statistical sampling procedures.

Most of the examples of application presented in the book are still related to the field of health, and its language should be especially familiar to public health specialists. However, sampling design and data analysis methodologies are introduced in a way that may be of interest for practitioners and students on any field where sampling surveys are likely to be used.

The book includes thorough discussion on special topics such as regression and ratio estimates in stratified random sampling, variance estimation in complex surveys, and linearization and multiple imputation methods. It also includes material on sampling, in developing countries, quality assurance sampling and screening for rare events or members of rare population groups. Chapter 15 deals with data collection in sample surveys and includes a practical and comprehensive presentation of instruments construction and data gathering procedures.

The different topics are introduced in a rigorous but straightforward manner. Chapters have, in general, a clear organization that stresses analysis of applications and provides alternative references for the more specialized aspects. A basic introductory course on statistics and a basic knowledge of algebra should be a sufficient prerequisite for most of the content of the book.

Sampling of Populations: Methods and Applications can be considered an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate level in health-related disciplines, a good alternative as a textbook for disciplines from the social sciences, and a possible resource for survey professionals.
