In light of more recent cognitive theories, we find that in the educational arena considerable value has been placed on certain teaching methods dating back to many centuries ago in history. Particularly notable in our times have been the Socratic method and training by medieval apprenticeship methods, among others. A look at Japanese education shows how these two different approaches have gained currency in Japanese education, especially in recent times. As Stevenson has said, the Japanese have found a way to apply some of the Wests most important theoretic breakthroughs to its educational system.
