As with any social institution, in Argentina teaching has its own history. The reconstruction of the origins and development of the teaching profession may contribute to unveil the characteristics of the profession today. In this sense, the recovery of the collective history of teaching presently constitutes a great challenge as we face the transformation. This paper attempts to understandfrom a historical perspectivethe traits that characterize teaching as a minimally professionalized activity. This article presents a social explanation which demythifies and challenges the concepts of teaching as strictly a womens job, the model teacher, and the ideology of the vocation.
