As with any social institution, in Argentina teaching has its own history. The reconstruction of the origins and development of the teaching profession may contribute to “unveil” the characteristics of the profession today. In this sense, the recovery of the collective history of teaching presently constitutes a great challenge as we face the transformation. This paper attempts to understand—from a historical perspective—the traits that characterize teaching as a minimally professionalized activity. This article presents a social explanation which demythifies and challenges the concepts of teaching as strictly a women’s job, the “model” teacher, and the ideology of the vocation.
