This paper takes a new look at the approaches that have been generated in qualitative research through their development in education. It reviews some of their principles and applications and identifies the general trends in qualitative research in the United States, Great Britain and Latin America. Raising the issue of qualitative trends is a first step toward mapping the impact that qualitative research has had in Latin America. It is neither an exhaustive nor definitive study of the field and makes no recommendations. Its purpose is simply to give some pointers to educators who are interested in qualitative research and lay the foundation for discussion among researchers.
