This research study investigates the variety of disasters which may affect schools and the consequences of their impact.  School facilities, personnel, and operations may all be affected by disasters resulting in: partial damage, major destruction, and contamination of the school facilities; injury to or death of students and staff members; and significant delays or complications in the schools’ ability to continue to fulfill their roles. After analyzing disasters and their possible consequences, the author concludes that school officials have the responsibility to gauge the hazards inherent in their school environment, plan the response to these hazards, and undertake the actions necessary to recover from these crisis situations. Ultimately, the nature of the response of school officials may influence whether lives are saved, mental and physical damage is minimized, or property is protected.
