4. It sounds as if you are saying that the most important resources of the Caribbean are its culture, its people and their history, and that the educational system must account for this and build upon it.
The people of the Caribbean have a very important part to play in the world, and the educational system has to be sensitive to this. Education can begin to open their eyes to this possibility because, in the Caribbean, typically we see only what we can take in from outside. We are not seeing what we have inside to give to the rest of the world. We have an external focus: we think that what we have is inferior, yet many of the things that we have thought to be inferior have, in fact, been exported throughout the world and thought to be superior.
And most often, our most educated people feel this way. The highly educated often feel that what is natural to us is inferior. In contrast, the less educated still have the spontaneity that is given to the rest of the world. I am saying, then, that our educational systems have to make a shift.
