10. It seems that all of us have memories of a teacher who influenced us profoundly, for good or ill. The adults that we became were shaped somehow by the teachers we had as children. How do you see the teacher’s role?

This brings me to the next point, that we should not see teachers and teacher training merely in technical terms. I have argued, for example, that the teacher has to be a social interpreter. The teacher has to have worked out his own position about important questions. While he may not be sure that he can convince his students of his perspective, if he can present something positive to them, they’ll either accept it or find something positive to work with. And I am talking here not only about techniques or the craft aspect of teaching, but also about philosophy and ideology.
