The Portal’s fourth anniversary
On September 24 the Educational Portal of the Americas will celebrate its fourth year as a tool for strengthening and expanding the formation and training of human resources in the Americas through the Internet. This initiative, together with the OAS scholarship and training programs, forms part of the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development’s strategy to support the promotion of human resources development in the region. http://www.educoas.org/portal/en/tema/editorial2005/sep05.aspx?culture=en&navid=36 The educational portal “Educando”, the first portal in the Dominican Republic to serve the entire educational community of the country was launched on August 11 during a ceremony held at the National Palace with the President of the Republic, Dr. Leonel Fernández. The initiative was attended by Indotel, Verizon and the Ministry for Education. The new portal will form part of the Network of Latin American Portals (http://www.relpe.org), which includes the educational portals of 17 countries that have committed to free circulation and use of the pedagogical content developed in each country, under defined technical standards. To date the portals Educarchile (Chile), Colombia Aprende (Colombia) y Huascarán (Perú) have formed part of the network. http://www.educando.edu.do/Educando/Inicio In follow-up to the recommendations made during the first meeting of CONSUPE held in New Mexico on July 22-23, the OAS and IOHE held a coordination meeting at the headquarters of the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development in Washington to discuss future work plans that will be analyzed during the meeting in Floriánopolis, Brazil in early October. The Center for Excellence for the Americas and the Office of
Telecommunications Development (BDT) of the International
Telecommunication Union (UIT) are organizing an online course in
Telecommunications Technology. The program has been developed by a group
of Nodos of the Center of Excellence for the Americas region: National
Telecommunications Administration of Uruguay (ANTEL); Universidad Blas
Pascal (Argentina), Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas
(Colombia), Universidad Externado de Colombia and the Technological
Institute of Buenos Aires (Argentina). The course will be offered through
the UIT in Spanish from August 15 through August 18, 2006. CISCO Systems
is supporting the graduate program by offering scholarships that cover 50%
of the participant cost. For additional information, see: Prize on Quality in Basic Education The 2005 Prize “Domingo Faustino Sarmiento” of the National Academy of Education will recognize works written in the area of quality of basic education (primary or secondary). Works should be unpublished and clearly state the problem and proposals for its improvement. The work should be between 100-200 letter-sized double-spaced pages (70 characters per line, 30 lines per page). Applicants should be residents of Argentina. The deadline to present work is December 1, 2005. The jury will announce the winner 30 days after the deadline and the Prize will be awarded on March 6, 2006. 14th Biennial Congress of IOHE Information regarding the 14th Biennial Congress of IOHE, which will be held October 2-5 in Florianópois, Brazil, is now available at: http://www.oui-iohe.qc.ca/ABOUT/es-index_congres.htm. The Congress, under the theme "Integrating the Americas Through Higher Education, will have three objectives: a) Following-up to the orientations taken at the 13th Congress (Veracruz) b) linking the topic of the Congress with that of the Summit in the Americas of Buenos Aires (November 2005), which will focus on three themes: Work and Job Creation, Struggle against Poverty and Governance and Democracy; and c) showing the social relevance of institutions of higher education. A common space for higher education In digital bulletin No. 100 published by IESALC (International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean) --an autonomous body of UNESCO-- director Claudio Rama analyzes the idea of building a common space of higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean. Abdallah Dr. Chaouki T. Abdallah, founding member of the Educational Portal of the Americas and the Institute of Advanced Studies for the Americas, has been appointed Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of New Mexico. Dr. Abdallah is also co-founder of ISTEC (Ibero-American Science and Technology Education Consortium), which currently encompasses more than 150 universities of the United States, Spain and Latin America. He is member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and has recently received the IEEE Millennium Medal as well as the Gardner-Zemke prize for 2002-2005. http://www.soe.unm.edu/Whats_New/news.html New portal on wireless technologies The Latin American School of Networks Foundation (ESLARED) and the Institute for Connectivity in the Americas (ICA) announced the launching of WiLAC portal. The launch took place during the “Experiences from Wireless Project Implementation” event in July in Mérida, Venezuela. WiLAC is a new information portal about Wireless Technologies for Development designed to support individuals, organizations, municipalities and businesses currently implementing or beginning community wireless connectivity projects. Throughout Latin American and the Caribbean the WiLAC portal promotes information on design, implementation, development, replication, and use of the necessary components for a successful community wireless project. Graphic design: Bidding for services The Executive Office of the Ibero-American Science and Technology Education Consortium will accept bids from academic members of the Consortium to produce ISTEC institutional, informational and promotional material. Bids will be received through August 24, 2005 until 12:00 a.m. (Albuquerque, NM time). The conference will cover aspects of theory, design and application of SCORM-related research issues. Aside from the regular presentations, the conference will include keynote addresses with speakers from both industry and academia.
