NOTES
1. The Latin expressionmilites et rustici (soldiers and farmers)was used in the Middle Ages to refer to the two rigid classes or castes in which some early medieval societies were divided.
2. The term burguesia is more commonly used in Spanish than its English equivalent (bourgeoisie). The expression middle class is used in this translation concurrently with bourgeoisie whenever burguesia appears in the original text.
3. The Almog vares were Catalonian mercenaries who, under Roger de la Flor, joined the army of Emperor Andronicus II (1258-1332) in his fight against the Turks.
